Today: Airi Isoda
My friend, Airi Isoda's first fashion show is taking place today, in just a couple hours. I haven't posted the second sneak peek of her process, so that will just have to be a "behind the scenes" look back now. It's been a long nine months for her and I can't believe she's made everything she has -- she's sewn fabric, cast concrete, cut wood, dipped stuff in paint, and knitted yarn...for all her twelve looks.
So, Airi, here's to your first big step forward. Good luck!

Roulette Top
I think this top is really cute. It's green and copper.

Kaleidoscope felt necklace
The idea of slicing a nice thick sheet of felt into these little perfect little diamonds, and assembling them into these perfectly structured pieces excites the hell out of me. $28 each at Homako.
Crown of feathers
I think this is a really cool way of using feathers as a headband. Who would've thunk!

Quirky Collective
This aviator cap from Quirky Collective reminds me of John Cusack's many-hat-loving daughter in 2012. The pants are so interestingly goofy-looking.

WHIT
Pieces from Whitney Pozgay's collection. Nice word play with her label WHIT, website being www.whit-ny.com. Also liking the shoes.

The Sartorialist: Neon
I don't know why this never posted, but I found it in my drafts folder. I like the neon! And the colors and the shoes!

Airi Isoda: An Observation
As you may have noticed, I'm obsessed with documenting things. I'm also equally fascinated by the process of making, which I think is all too often overlooked. Usually, all we see is the finished product that's all slick and polished. Seldom do we see the rougher beginnings and in-betweens, which to me, say so much more than the perfectly edited end product.
My friend and fashion designer, Airi Isoda, has been busy experimenting with ideas for her very first collection that's set to debut next year. Being the fan that I am, I took this as an opportunity to document her process. I love capturing little details and nuances that might've otherwise been lost and forgotten.
Everything Airi creates is innovative and fresh, always looking to explore new territory through material use and form. Being a trained architect, she looks for opportunities to incorporate architectural elements and materials. In this collection, she experiments with concrete, liquid rubber, wood, and cable rail (didn't get a photo of this one!)

Black Bag
Been looking for a simple but not boring black bag that I can actually afford...

Belts: A Study
When it comes to choosing belts, I always look at how well the buckle is integrated into the rest of the belt rather than it being a separate piece of hardware. Here are a couple examples from my closet.
1: J. CREW Patent leather belt
2: BOSSINI Men's matte black leather belt
3: MUSE Cognac leather belt
Heating & Cooling
Really really beautiful and interesting gown by Jessie Dewall of Heating & Cooling. I discovered her through this wedding gown she did for her friend Midori's wedding, featured on Once Wed. I love how the gown looks like it's made of some paper-like material, like Tyvek!

J. Crew: Backpack
This might be completely impractical, but I can't deny its pull.

Etsy: Yokoo
While posting my own stuff on Etsy a couple weeks ago, I came across this amazing store called Yokoo, a seller of scarves and other accessories. The chunky soopascarf is such a statement, but what really does it for me is the photography and styling. I love how the photos feel just like the products -- chunky, rich, and WHOLE, like a coloring book page with big spaces to color. Those were always my favorites.

Here are interviews with Yokoo on Vice and Mint.

Amazing Anthropologie Installations
This looked like stained strips of wood.
Pieces of painted cardboard, scored, folded, and nailed to the wall.
Giftwrap tissue dyed, rolled into a cone, and bunched together to form a wall of blossoms.
