Erik Spiekermann's House
I know I've gotten over my whole über modern everything, but Erik Spiekermann's house in East Berlin has a couple warm, playful, witty elements that I love. Discovered through swissmiss.

i like that yellow building that's bowing out.

I like this wall treatment. Hardened hay? I'm kidding, I forget what this is called. Anyone?

Magnet tacks? Laptop accessories on magnets? Won't that magnetize it and destroy their hard drives? And the paneling, that doesn't look like cork, or is it? Maybe the ones from forbo?

Fabric panels with zippered openings to hide cable clutter.

Last but not the least, a remote-controlled mountaineer's harness to peruse their two-storey bookshelf! How fun!

Dwell Patterns
Heath Ceramics teamed up with Dwell to create these amazing tile (or whatever you want it to be) patterns. I'm not really a pattern person, but there's something really inventive about these...

Yokoo (again!)
I just realized that I had just scratched the surface of this Yokoo character. This photo from Yokoo's tumblr made me go "Oh. My. God. Are you kidding me."

Matt Lamp
I'm not sure how useful this light really is, because of the amount of light (or lack of it, it seems) it emits. But it's interesting nontheless.

Unhappy Hipsters
Okay so this is old, but maybe there are some of you who haven't seen it yet. Unhappy Hipsters is a website that makes fun of modern design via images from Dwell magazine. I wonder what Dwell has to say about this... It's funny because I have the same thoughts... Why do they have to look so sad and serious all the time?!?!

Ghosts of Chairs Past
I have been collecting my chairs-of-the-moment for a while now, and have finally decided it's time to reveal them to you, my dear readers. Here is a run down of my favorite modern chairs.

Vitra Softshell chair
When I was talking about character, I didn't particularly mean this chair. I know it doesn't look like much, but I think this is the most comfortable Vitra chair I have ever sat on. I guess that's not really saying much, but it is so hard to find modern chairs that are comfortable, too. I just remembered this chair again also because I have been on the lookout for a desk chair to replace the pouf that I'm currently sitting on. The Softshell chair comes in 28 different colors and 3 different fabrics.

Unknown Office chair
Who knows what chair this is?? I really like it. It looks like something that would be carried by Vitra, but it's not. It's an image out of the now Domino magazine.

Vitra Standard chair
I was in love with this chair a year ago. I saw it in quite a range of settings in magazines, from bauhaus and mid-century modern homes to the pages of Martha Stewart. In all colors too. It's proven to be a very versatile chair in terms of aesthetic pairings. Comfort, on the other hand, is another thing. I have never sat on this chair, but there's not much to say about it. I choose it more for aesthetics and character than comfort.
Next up: My more conservative, but timeless chair picks.

In the Market
In case you can't tell yet, I'm in the market for a million things. A sofa, a bike, a doorstop, a dining table for my parents' place, lamps, and a rug for both our places. This caught my eye for my place. I know it's for babies, but doesn't it make you want to crawl into that tent?

I really really like the room/picture on the left if only for whatever it is that's on the bed!
Peggy Wong: Taupe + Purple Room
I really really really like this room. The taupe + the purple + the hint of yellow really does it. And the white.

The Balance between Aesthetics and Comfort
Ever since I started at my new job, where I've been exposed to more comfortable, maybe-not-as-modern-looking furniture, but DEFINITELY comfortable, and after being a victim of modern buyer's remorse, I think I now have a pretty good sense of balance between aesthetics and comfort.
I never would have chosen this sofa (by DePadova) several years ago when I was still new to this world of design, but it actually appeals to me now. It looks like it would be very comfortable, something I could sink and sleep in, yet still very clean-lined, not messy.
PS: I have not yet bought a sofa for my place, which explains why I can't seem to feel relaxed. I have one lounge chair I bought from a seller on craigslist. A vintage armchair which I love, but I would really like a sofa I can stretch out on. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
