Lately, I've been busy making these little gocco'd microwaveable hot packs. It's something I made primarily for myself because of my frequent tummyaches (due to cold weather, etc.) Previously I would use one from one of those stands at the mall. But it was the wrong shape and size and... was lime green with butterflies and flowers on it. So I decided to make my own. I'm at the stage now where I'm discovering areas for improvement in some of the samples I'd sent out.

1. Rice vs. Barley filling - Barley costs less and was on sale so I got a bunch to test. Turns out, it burns really easily, which you can really smell. I guess it's definitely back to rice.

2. Lemon Peel fail - One of my smells, Lemon Peel, which I thought smelled fresh unheated, didn't give off as strong a smell after heating. It was a bit of a disappointment since two of my closest friends ordered that one. I'll have to find a replacement eventually, but at least I know now that I want something that's as effective-smelling as lavender. Need to test the spearmint next.

Oh I just thought of something... what if I mix in tea leaves like English Breakfast. Or COFFEE! I'm getting carried away, let's see how it goes.

Paper Bag

I'm always fascinated with unusual yet humble materials. Designed by one of my favorites, Naoto Fukasawa, these pouches are made of a material called Soft Naoron, developed by Japanese paper manufacturer, Onao, by modernizing the traditional paper-making process. Soft Naoron is made of wood pulp and poly olefin, is water-resistant, yet flexible and soft to the touch.

Thoughtful Wall Stickers

I have a pet peeve. And that is for wall stickers that are merely decorative -- no humor, no 2D/3D interaction, no new point of view. But these ones from Hu2 Design elicited from me an internal chuckle. They are meant to interact with your switch plates, reminding us of where our electricity comes from: hamsters, pinwheels, and coal.

PS: I seem to always find Andrew Price's pieces the most interesting out of all the others at GOOD, which can sometimes feel a little too hyped up. Good job, Andrew! :)

The Glif

This story has been filling me with inspiration in all sorts of ways this past week.

The Glif is a little iPhone 4 accessory these two guys, Tom Gerhardt and Dan Provost, developed a prototype of, and put on Kickstarter for crowd-sourced funding. Their goal was $10,000 to cover the high cost of injection molding. In just three days, they got $70,000. They are currently at $90,629 with 3575 backers to date, and they still have three weeks to go before funding ends on November 2, 2010.

Cork Coaster

Cork Tray

Does anyone know where this cork tray is from?? Since my meals are always in parts, I've been looking for a tray that will keep my little saucers from sliding all over the place. At first I thought a silicone coated tray would work, but this looks like a good solution too.

Lace Tape

Yes it's lace, and like a friend used to say, "Don't judge." But I picked this one out because it's the first one I've seen done pretty well. Very understated.

Shutting Out the Sound

I often find myself in need of headphones, because my brother and I share a room now, and his Team Fortress 2 is constantly blaring in the background. I would wear my earphones if they weren't so short -- it makes it hard to sit back. So I'm waiting to get this pair in the mail...
Some features are: phone headset capability (meaning there's a mic), jack for a second person to listen in, foldability.

Smelling Sticks

If these were cheaper, I'd be getting one. Perfume rollers from Portland's Alder & Co. The color combination really does it for this product considering how simple it really is.
